Where to Watch St. Joseph’s Cathedral Light Up With a Cocktail in Hanoi

· 7 min read

Mặt sau Nhà Thờ Lớn Hà Nội (St. Joseph's Cathedral) nhìn từ trên cao phía phố Ấu Triệu, cầu vồng sau mưa

If you want a cocktail with St. Joseph’s Cathedral in front of you, go to the 4th floor of 3 Au Trieu Street in Hoan Kiem — that is Moon Men Cocktail Bar, which looks across at the cathedral through large windows. We open at 5:00 PM every day. The best window is from opening until 8:00 PM: the sky darkens, the cathedral is lit, and it is happy hour.

Below are the questions people usually message us before they come: how to get up, where to sit, what time to arrive and what to drink.

Where is Moon Men in relation to the cathedral?

Au Trieu Street runs right behind St. Joseph’s Cathedral, inside Hanoi’s Old Quarter. Moon Men is on the 4th floor of number 3. Because we are behind it, you do not see the twin-tower façade from the postcards. You see the body of the cathedral from above: the tiled roof, the tall arched windows and stone walls weathered by more than a century of Hanoi weather. Very few places in the neighbourhood give you this angle.

Getting here:

  • Look for the Mien+ entrance at street level and take the elevator to the 4th floor. Moon Men shares the building with Miên Man Cafe.
  • There is plenty of room to park a car right next to the building. If you come by motorbike, our ground-floor reception will show you where to park.
  • From Hoan Kiem Lake it is about a 5-minute walk.

Which seats face the cathedral?

Every table at Moon Men is indoors. We are not a rooftop and there is no outdoor seating; the view is through glass, so rain or humidity never cost you your seat.

  • Carpet floor and glass floor: these face the cathedral, mostly with sofas. Good for two people or a small group planning to stay a while.
  • Bar counter: faces the bartenders. Great if you like watching drinks being made, not the place for the view.

If the view is the reason you are coming, book ahead and ask for the carpet or glass floor.

What time should you arrive for the view?

We open at 5:00 PM. Come early and you can watch the cathedral change colour as the daylight goes — sunset in Hanoi moves through the year, so there is no fixed time to quote. Once it is dark, the cathedral is lit until 8:00 PM.

So 5:00–8:00 PM gives you both: the last of the daylight and the cathedral lit up. It is also Moon Men’s happy hour, when selected cocktails are 150,000 VND — the qualifying drinks are marked on the menu.

After 8:00 PM the cathedral goes dark. The bar stays open until 1:00 AM Monday to Thursday and 2:00 AM Friday to Sunday, and the room itself takes over.

Ask the Moon Men team about their favourite weather, though, and the answer is rain: the back of the cathedral, rain on the glass, everything slowing down.

What should you order while looking at the cathedral?

There is a full list of classics, but if you are here, try something drawn from Hanoi itself:

  • The Cyclo (265,000 VND) — from the Old Quarter collection. Its liqueur follows a family recipe from one bartender’s grandmother, with pandan. It arrives on a tiny cyclo in front of old photographs of the cathedral and the Old Quarter — a nice echo when the real cathedral is outside the window. The full story is in our post on The Cyclo.
  • The Padlar (225,000 VND) — a memory of Tràng Tiền ice cream, with young green rice (cốm) syrup, cream and lemon.
  • Summer Delights (270,000 VND) — sour sấu fruit, a light tingle of Sichuan pepper and dổi seed, softened with ginger honey.
  • Not drinking alcohol? A mocktail made to your taste is 180,000 VND, and the bartenders can turn most signatures into an alcohol-free version.

Menu prices do not include the 8% service charge. Food is limited to a cashew bar snack (80,000 VND), so have dinner first if you are hungry.

Do you need to book?

It is not required, but book if you want a seat facing the cathedral, especially on weekends and holidays. No deposit is needed, and we hold your table for 15 minutes after the booking time.
